Winter Home

September 3, 2022, Seabiscuit arrived at the dock of Lewisporte Marina, her winter home. The day was just as sunny and warm as the yacht club members we met. We believe we have settled in a good place.

Now the work begins, preparing the boat for haul out and for our journey home. But the weather is lovely and there are many places to explore nearby. We work short days and visit the local sites and walk the picturesque trails.

Evenings are usually spent in the club house where fellow sailors share stories and some entertain us with their musical talents. We appreciate the access to television so we can observe the funeral proceedings for Queen Elizabeth 11.

We move into a cozy cabin in Embree for our last week, making it easier to finish the cleaning and packing for winter.

The Beothuk Interpretation Centre at Boyd’s Cove hosted the annual “Voices in the Wind” where we were invited to observe dancing and drumming and enjoyed a lunch of moose, soda bread and dried fish. It was well-attended even though the rain took us indoors and away from the ceremonial fire. The spirit garden was alive with the mementos left by visitors - dancing mussel shells hanging from the trees. Walking the trail we found the statue of Shanawdithit, known to be the last surviving Beothuk. Thanks to Michael Crummey’s River Thieves we are familiar with the history and welcome the opportunity to linger in this memorable place.

Our travels home are just ahead of Hurricane Fiona, which left Port aux Basque devastated. We do get a short trip to the Port au Port Peninsula and find Rose Blanche Light in the fog.

Our overnight crossing is uncomfortable as there were no cabins available. We wake to the red sunrise, as Fiona approaches. Heading north through New Brunswick, it is rainy and cool. Many hydro trucks pass us moving south to bring needed aid to the people of the Maritime provinces in the wake of Fiona.

We stop in Grand Falls to visit the farmer’s market, Cacouna and Lac Megantic, visiting the memorial to the devastating rail disaster and drive through the beautiful Eastern Townships.

We arrive in Summerstown just in time for a very special 1st birthday.
